I’ve read that for some people this occurs even if there are no updates available. If you have installed Microsoft applications (such as Office) on your Mac computer, you’ve likely noticed Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) pops up every day to tell you if there are updates available. Remember to restart your computer after applying either of these methods. What follows is another method, in case the other one doesn’t work for you. That method also allows you to change the autoupdate interval. I manually deleted about 60 files, all from folders associated with Microsoft, but won't know if that's enough for a while. In October 2021 I posted a different approach to disabling Microsoft AutoUpdate, as detailed here. In my case, I used EasyFind to look for "Microsoft Autoupdate" and "MAU", including hidden and system files, and found a long list of old versions and copies going back several years. There are commercial OS X uninstall apps that claim to be able to find and remove all the files associated with this updater, but most of them looked as dodgy as the thing they claim to remove. One article in OSXDaily reported 19 files associated with this app, and a large number of temporary files that OS X would probably get rid of over time. I suggest that anyone wanting to get rid of this do searches for these articles and get a complete list. Other stuff that probably has to be deleted: ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft AU Daemon and It looks like the app itself is here: /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/Microsoft AutoUpdate.app Some articles reported that some virus detectors will find it and get rid of it, but I didn't follow up on these. There are several directories containing pieces of the puzzle, and it looks like most, if not all of these have to be tracked down and deleted. Probably it has been updated so it now shows itself.Ī search on "how to remove Microsoft Autoupdate" comes up with a few articles on how to get rid of it. It looks like this updater would have been installed when those apps were installed, and that it has been running in background for a long time. In my case, I downloaded OneNote some time ago, but deleted it when it became apparent it was useless and intrusive. I also have no MS apps, but have had in the past. I did a force quit with Activity Monitor, but it came up again today. I got this too, for the first time, yesterday, July 18. How do I quarantine them and delete them and clean up the computer? I'm not sure how to use Malware when it's found a threat. I realise now that might have been another hoax. After reading the posts here, I realise that this Mac Cleanup Pro is a hoax but I'm worried that it might have installed something? I also think that recently I had a message saying my Adobe needed updating so I clicked on it. Library/LaunchAgents/ If I clean this up will it compromise my start-up and will I lose information? The other threats are PUP.Mac Cleanup Pro and lists 6 items relating to that. One which I'm concerned about is OSX.Genieo which seems to be the thread to. So I ran a Malware check and it's found 7 threats. I did a re-start and got a message from Mac cleanup to say it had found issues and threats. When I uploaded my website, it usually goes to Firefox. I had trouble uploading a flyer yesterday. How to use Malware after it picks up a threat I've had a popup from Mac Cleanup Pro for a while which I've been deleting. I cannot upgrade my Macbook Pro to Catalina, because I cannot run my Microsoft Office applications on Catalina. My son’s Macbook Pro (late 2011, running High Sierra) doesn't have this problem but he has Microsoft Office version 15.41. It seems odd that only two people reported this issue so far. Rasmussen reported the same issue in the AVG Community he is using a paid version of AVG. I searched the internet and haven't found a solution. I guess the Microsoft Office Microsoft_AutoUpdate_1301_Updater.pkg software has burrowed itself deeply into my Mac. Then I re-ran AVG several times the same threat is reported and it will not resolve. I searched the Library for "Microsoft," and moved two plist files to Trash: I went into the Libraries, found Microsoft AutoUpdate.app and moved it to Trash. I uninstalled AVG Antivirus and re-installed it. I run Microsoft Office version 16.16.15. After support for Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac ended on October 13, 2020, when running an AVG Antivirus Deep Scan, Microsoft_AutoUpdate_1301_Updater.pkg is reported as a Potentially Unwanted Program threat (Other:PUP-gen ) but it will not resolve. Microsoft_AutoUpdate_1301_Updater.pkg Reported by AVG Antivirus as a PUP I use the free version of AVG on a Macbook Pro (early 2015, running macOS Mojave).
